This research evaluated the effects of two different diets, one containing walnuts and the other almonds on endothelial function (Bhardwaj R, et.al., 2018).
The endothelium is the inner layer of the blood vessels and is important for healthy cardiovascular function.
The study was a randomized crossover, controlled intervention study with overweight participants. They were given either walnut or almond diets.
Endothelial function was assessed physiologically by flow-mediated dilation and biochemically by sVCAM (soluble vascular cell adhesion molecules).
The researchers found that the walnut diet significantly improved flow-mediated dilation and decreased sVCAM whereas the almond diet improved flow-mediated dilation and significantly decreased sVCAM.
Both the almonds and the walnuts improved the endothelial function.
