Osteopenia and osteoporosis are a common concern especially if you are a women, since the risk for these conditions increase after menopause.

The reviewed research evaluated the effect of green tea polyphenol supplementation and Tai Chi exercises on serum markers of bone turnover, calcium metabolism and muscle strength in post menopausal osteopenic women (Shen CL, et al. 2012). The participants were randomly assigned to either a placebo, 500 mg of green tea polyphenols per day, placebo plus Tai Chi exercises of 60 minutes per session, 3 times per week or green tea polyphenols plus Tai Chi exercises. Samples for testing were collected at the start of the study and after 1, 3 and 6 months. Muscle strength was measured at the start of the study and after 3 and 6 months.

After 1 month there was a significant increase in bone-specific alkaline phosphatase from taking the green tea polyphenol supplements, which also happened after 3 months of Tai Chi exercises. A significant increase in the change of bone-specific alkaline phosphatase, tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase ratio was also found after 3 months from taking the green tea polyphenol and after 6 months of Tai Chi exercises.

An easy way to beneficially affect bone formation is to take a capsule of high quality green tea daily. Our “Better Green Tea” formula contains 600 mg of green tea polyphenols and meets the German standards for pesticide content which is very strict.
