What are some of the effects of elevated blood sugar?
Hyperglycemia (elevated blood glucose) causes glycation of proteins, it damages the protein. This generates free radicals adversely affecting lipids, DNA and proteins in various tissues. Oxidative stress damage all kind of tissue.
For that reason it may even affect some serious conditions and may play an important role in the development of complications in diabetes such as lens cataracts, nephropathy (kidney dysfunction) and neuropathy (Osawa T, Kato Y, 2005).
You don’t however have to have diabetes to get damage from elevated blood glucose.
Impaired glucose tolerance negatively affect the nervous system.
This means as you get less insulin sensitive, your blood glucose will be elevated to a higher level after a meal, and it takes longer before it drops down to a normal level.
The neuropathy associated with glucose intolerance is similar to early diabetic neuropathy (Smith AG, Singleton JR, 2008).
Glucose intolerance is a gradual process. It means we get less sensitive to insulin. There can be several contributing factors. Foods with a high glycemic index, which mean they elevate the blood glucose to a high level and trigger a big insulin response, can create insulin resistance. Especially processed food like high glycemic index carbohydrates and trans fat can do that, but also chronic stress can do that, as well as other factors.
What can you do to protect yourself from the damaging effects of glycation?

You can also take a well absorbed form of curcumin which helps to reduce inflammation and free radicals, but especially glutathione would be good, which this study found to suppress oxidative stress in prevention of diabetic complications such as diabetic nephropathy and neuropathy (Oawa T, Kato Y, 2005).
Use S-Acetyl Glutathione since it gets into the cells, because very little of regular reduced glutathione is absorbed because it is oxidized in the stomach.
