Short Bursts of Everyday Activity May Lower Death Risk, Study Suggests

Many people struggle to find time for regular gym workouts or structured exercise. However, new research suggests that short, intense bursts of everyday activity, such as running for a bus or carrying heavy groceries, may be linked to a longer life.

Researchers call these brief bursts VIGorous Intermittent Lifestyle Physical Activity (VILPA).

What Was the Study?

Published in the International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity (January 2026), the study examined data from 3,293 U.S. adults who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES).

  • The Participants: Adults who reported that they did not do any structured exercise or sports.
  • The Tracking: Participants wore wrist accelerometers (fitness trackers) to measure short bursts of vigorous movement lasting up to one minute at a time.
  • The Follow-Up: Researchers tracked the participants over an average of 6.7 years, during which 290 deaths occurred.

Key Findings

  1. Around 5 Bursts a Day Showed Significant Benefit: Compared to people who did no intense movements, those who engaged in about 5.3 short bursts of vigorous activity per day had a 44% lower risk of dying from any cause during the study period.
  2. Diminishing Returns After 8 Bursts: Doing more than 8 bursts per day was still associated with lower risk, but the extra benefit leveled off.
  3. Nuance and Limitations: When researchers removed participants who already had heart disease or cancer at the start of the study, the link between VILPA and lower mortality risk became weaker and statistically less clear. This suggests that some of the observed benefit might be due to existing health conditions affecting how active people were in the first place (a concept known as reverse causation).

The Takeaway

While the authors note that longer studies with larger groups are needed to prove a direct cause-and-effect relationship, the findings highlight a promising message: you don’t necessarily need structured workout sessions to get health benefits. Moving quickly or with higher intensity during everyday tasks, even for just a minute at a time, may play a role in supporting long term health.
