You need to keep your glucose metabolism healthy by keeping your blood glucose at a low and
normal level.
There are several reasons why this is important. When your blood glucose is elevated to a high
level as it tends to be when we get insulin resistant, and when we eat high glycemic index food,
we usually get tired.
Elevated blood glucose also leads to increased low-grade inflammation, and inflammation is the
the second thing you need to keep low to stay healthy.
Increasing CRP, an inflammatory marker, has been found with higher fasting glucose levels,
even among subjects with fasting glucose in the normal range (Aronson D. et.al., 2004).

 

 

Eating high nutrient, low glycemic index meals are important, and so is exercise.
There is however something else you also can do to keep your blood glucose lower.
You can take berberine, a natural plant derivative.
Berberine has shown to provide several health benefits. One of them is keeping the blood
glucose at a lower, normal level.

In the following study participants with type 2 diabetes were randomized to take either berberine
or metformin (a diabetic medication) for 3 months (Yin J, et.al., 2008).
The effect of berberine was found to be similar to metformin.
A significant decrease in hemoglobin A1c from 9.5% to 7.5% was found when taking berberine.
Hemoglobin A1c is a measurement of long term glucose control.
Fasting blood glucose was reduced with 34.9%, postprandial blood glucose with 43.9%, and
plasma triglycerides with 21.2%. Postprandial glucose is the blood glucose measured after a
meal.
The insulin resistance index was reduced by 44.7%.
Another study which included 116 patients also with type 2 diabetes showed similar results
(Zhang Y, et.al., 2008).
In these studies, the participants had type 2 diabetes which means they were severely insulin
resistant.
There is no reason to wait until we get a serious disease before taking action.
Berberine can be used to help keep glucose metabolism healthy.

The importance of this vitamin and why some people may not be getting enough of it

Thiamine vitamin B1 is an essential cofactor for 4 enzymes involved in the production of energy (ATP) and the synthesis of essential cellular molecules. 

The total body stores of thiamine are relatively small, and thiamine deficiency can develop  secondary to inadequate nutrition, high alcohol consumption, increased urinary excretion and acute metabolic stress (Attaluri P, et.al., 2018).

We need to keep in mind that we don’t have to have severe deficiencies of vitamins to develop symptoms that may not be recognized as caused by marginal deficiencies.

Fast food consumption will not provide adequate levels of nutrients even if they usually provide excess calories. Alcohol makes us use more of the B vitamins. 

It is also quite common to experience an increase in urinary excretion as we get older. Many men and women have to get up several times during the night, even if they are not very old. This makes us excrete more of both minerals and vitamins, especially the B vitamins which are water soluble.

Thiamine deficiency has been suggested to be associated with many cardiovascular diseases  and risk factors including type 1 and type 2 diabetes, obesity, chronic vascular inflammation, dyslipidemia, heart failure, myocardial infarction, nerve conduction defects, and depression (Eshak ES, Arafa AE, 2018).  A lot of people die of cardiovascular disease, and thiamine deficiency could play a role in the development of that.

Remember thiamine is only one of the B vitamins, and they are all very important.

Reduced bioavailability is a major limiting factor of regular thiamine.  To overcome this issue benfotiamine a form of thiamine which is much more bioavailable was developed (Ray V, et.al., 2018).

A high quality vitamin B-complex should contain this form of vitamin B1 in addition to better bioavailable forms of some of the other B vitamins.

Excess reactive oxygen species and oxidative damage have been associated with the pathogenesis of osteoarthritis.  Joint fluid from patients with osteoarthritis is characterized by significantly decreased extracellular superoxide dismutase (SOD) levels, a significantly decreased glutathione level, and ascorbate when compared to knee joints with intact cartilage (Regan EA, et.al., 2008).

SOD is one of the body’s antioxidant enzymes and glutathione is the body’s most effective antioxidant.  These changes in joint fluid antioxidants are likely to accelerate the oxidative damage of the cartilage.

The body needs copper, zinc, and manganese to produce SOD, so one of the things you can do to help prevent cartilage degeneration is to take these minerals.  The glutathione level was also reduced, and you can also take S-Acetyl Glutathione to increase cellular glutathione (Cacciatore I, et.al., 2010).

Don’t make the mistake and supplement with reduced glutathione which is the most common form on the market.  No significant changes were observed in biomarkers of oxidative stress, including glutathione status of oral glutathione supplementation (Allen J, Bradley RD, 2011).
