Supplements: The Importance of quality

When it comes to nutritional supplements there are no governmental agency overseeing the quality of what is made.  It is up to the nutritional supplement industry to govern them selves when it comes to the quality of the supplements manufactured.

The importances of having specific operational procedures and to check if they are followed were realized several years ago.  The nutritional supplement industry has set up organizations for that purpose, and manufacturers can join and agree to be inspected to be certified.  The certification is called GMP which stands for good manufacturing practices.

Since being certified and then follow specific guidelines in the manufacturing process is more costly, quality usually costs more, it is comparatively few manufactures that are certified.

Being certified is not the only thing which is important when it comes to good and effective supplements.  The raw materials used need to be checked for potency and consistency, it should be consistent from batch to batch.

It is also very important to check for substances that should not be found in the raw materials.  These substances can be a variety of toxins, for example pesticides and it can also be heavy metals.  Fungus and bacterial growth also need to be checked.

Of course every manufacturer will tell you that they have excellent quality, but I have often found when I ask if they have screened the raw materials they use for specific contaminants, and I mention them, they answer that they don’t check for that.  The ads these companies run usually look great, but when scrutinized the quality is very disappointing.

There are many other aspects affecting the effectiveness of a nutritional supplement formula.  The tablet needs to disintegrate easily when ingested.  If the tablet has coating and fillers preventing the tablet from breaking down within a certain time, none of the nutrients in the tablet may be released and none of the benefits realized.  A disintegration test needs to be performed.

Other important factors are the bioavailability of the raw material used.  If for example the source of the minerals in the supplement is in a form the body can’t easily utilize, most of what you are taking is a waste.

Sometimes the ads and the labels do not tell the whole story.  Keep in mind if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.

If claims are made about its effectiveness always look for and ask for references referring to the scientific research.  If no research exists, the claims are not much to pay attention to.

Another important point to remember is even if research exists to support the effect of the ingredients in a formula, it has to contain enough of the active ingredient to produce the desired effect.

For example if 1000mg was used as a daily dose in the research and the formula you bought only contains 50mg as the daily dose, it is very unlikely that this formula will produce any results at all.

You are making a serious error if you think that two formulas with some of the same ingredients are equal and therefore are going to produce the same results.  This is not necessarily so.

It costs more to check everything which should be checked, but an expensive supplement in itself does not guarantee that the quality is high.

When buying supplements, the least you should be looking for is that the supplement is manufactured in a GMP certified facility. It is not the same if it says that it is manufactured according to GMP recommended guidelines.  Look for scientific research references to back up the claim of the formula.  It is not enough that somebody says it will produce all kinds of results.

These are reasons why BioPro, Inc., TissueRecovery.com have formulas manufactured in GMP certified facilities and provide plenty of scientific research references.  You can find the original abstracts of the articles on our website.  For information and research related to our formulas log onto www.TissueRecovery.com or call 1-880-883-1252.
